World Book Day - March 2025

We celebrated World Book Day in style this year on 6th March!

We had a range of activities with a focus on reading and adding that sense of competition. A couple of weeks ahead of the day, tutor groups had been challenged with decorating their doors in a style of a book – the book choice was entirely up to them, and we had such a wide range from The Shining to Charlotte’s Web!  It was such a difficult decision to choose a winner from each House but after much deliberation we announced the winners were:

Well done to those groups, but also a huge well done to all the groups and tutors for joining in and showing such artistic skills and ingenuity in your designs.

On the big day we had a competition that challenged students to find members of staff with badges that held the answers to a book title hunt. We watched many students busy trying to locate staff over the Thursday and Friday as they decided what word fitted the selection of book titles provided. We had a winner, and two main runners up, with all students getting achievement points and a reward for participation.

We also had a creative competition with our ‘Design a Book Token’ option. Our artistic students came up with some beautiful designs highlighting the level of skill we have here at CPS. Winners are to be announced ahead of the Easter break.

To support reading, during each lesson staff read an extract from six different books. These were tasters to highlight just some of the books we have here in our lovely library and to promote reading for pleasure.

Students could, of course, claim their £1 book token either from their tutor or the library to be exchanged for a WBD £1 book in shops – and to assist with that we had a large number of ‘This Story is a Lie’ by Benjamin Dean in school to help students claim ownership of a great new book.

Our library lessons focused on WBD throughout the week, and we ended our reading celebration with a book based weekly quiz. All these activities were designed to reinforce the importance and value of reading, and especially reading for pleasure as we believe strongly in supporting, encouraging and nurturing an interest in reading. Our staff not only joined in with activities, but they also demonstrated their support by donning some excellent costumes. We had a whole range of book and comic characters visit the site – and it contributed to such a brilliant atmosphere for the students. So, a thank you to fellow colleagues for their participation. We have already started thinking about how we can celebrate next year!
