Gas Leak - Updates

Saturday 10 January, 3pm

Message sent to parents by Mr John:

I wanted to update you regarding the recent gas leak and supply issue affecting parts of the school.
Repairs and Heating:

Work is underway to repair the gas leak and associated pipework. While progress is being made, some areas of the school will remain without heating, hot water, or gas on Monday 12 January. These works do not currently restrict the entrance to the school.
We are doing everything possible to minimise disruption, including deploying portable heaters to some classrooms. However, conditions may still be colder than usual, so please ensure your child comes to school dressed in their school uniform, with potentially additional layers underneath and a coat.  Staff will then direct students as to whether they can remain in their coats if the ambient temperature in any given room is lower than ideal. The current weather forecast for Monday is warmer than we have experienced at the end of last week and today, so should help our current situation.

Catering:

Due to the gas supply issue and a missed food delivery Friday, our catering service will be significantly disrupted on Monday. We strongly advise that all students bring a packed lunch and any snacks they may need.
We appreciate that this is short notice, but sharing this information now will allow families to plan over the weekend.
I will provide further updates on Sunday 11 January by 5.00pm.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to resolve these issues.

Message sent to parents by Mr John:

Following our communication earlier today, I can confirm that our school was evacuated due to gas leaks on site. I was very impressed with the conduct of our students during this unprecedented event.

Contractors are currently on-site carrying out repairs. Unfortunately, a mains gas leak has been detected, which means the school will remain closed on Friday, 9th January 2026. I will receive updates over the weekend regarding the progress of the works and will provide a further update on Sunday, 11th January 2026, no later than 17:00PM.

Tomorrow, we have a group of Year 11 students sitting their Health and Social Care examination. Whilst the site is closed for repairs it remains safe. Therefore, this examination will continue and as it is in the best interests of our student’s hard work and effort. Parent/Carers of these students please read the separate EduLink communication from Ms E Jones, Deputy Headteacher.

Staff have been instructed to set class work via EduLink. This work should be completed to the best of your child’s ability in preparation for their next lesson. Please remind students that this is still considered a school day.

I would like to thank you for your support during today’s evacuation and early closure. The positive comments we have received are greatly appreciated.

Thursday 8 January, 12.30pm

Unfortunately we have had a serious gas leak at the school - all students and staff are safe.  The majority of students have been sent home.

On the advice of the local authority, the remaining students have been taken to the leisure centre and parents should collect them from there as soon as possible.

We will provide further updates regarding the school site as soon as we have news.
