PE Activities - May 2023

As this half term draws to a close we have had plenty of great sporting experiences to reflect on.

Mikki Austin

Our netball club players had a brilliant experience to close their season when Mikki Austin, Surrey Storm Netball Super League player and Director, came to visit. Surrey Storm Netball are based in Guildford at Surrey Sport Park. Mikki came and spoke to our players about what it takes to be an elite athlete and was a brilliant role model for our female sports students to learn about her work with Sky Sports and the Super League. Thank you to Mikki for taking the time out of her very busy schedule to come to Calthorpe.

Our boys Volleyball team competed in the Hampshire Volleyball finals. They fought hard and after some excellent competition, they were placed 6th in Hampshire, a brilliant achievement for the Calthorpe boys.

That’s a wrap for our under 16s girls’ season. After a fantastic Hampshire Cup final the girls finished runners up and they are also our league champions! For our Year 11s it was their last ever game at CPS and they performed admirably. Huge thank you to Fleet Town FC for hosting the finals. POM was Jasmine L.

Volleyball     Cup Final

It has been great to see the return of the athletics season! Well done to all who competed so far. On Tuesday 23 May we had a number of Year 9 and 10 students competing at the Senior District event.

We held our own inhouse 3 v 3 Street Basketball tournament with teams entered from Years 7, 8 and 10. This is a different version of the traditional Basketball game. It involves just half a court, one hoop and only 3 players, lots of pace and speed. It has now become one of the largest urban team sports. Our players competed to battle it out for the winner's title with some great shots and determination to win the ball.  Well done to all the players that entered.  We look forward to the next event.

10 students from Calthorpe Park School and three from Robert Mays met at Bounty Squash club on Thursday night to learn skills and mini games with Hampshire Squash coach Andrew May. Our Year 7s played games to test their accuracy and ball placement and our Year 10s competed in games with Robert Mays. Well done to everyone that took part. Squash club runs as a Thursday after-school club and is open to all year groups. Once a month we travel to play matches on the courts in Basingstoke. Students are welcome to come and give us a try.

Our social Tuesdays have still been running with the addition of Everyone Active running a fitness session. These seasons are varied in work out style and give students the chance to come and work on their fitness levels, whatever your current ability, with a qualified instructor. These seasons are free and run weekly on a Tuesday 3-4pm. Please come and see Mrs Gorton in PE to sign up.

Huge well done to those students who come to Social Tuesday every week, organising their own games of badminton and football. I look forward to seeing many more students attend now the weather is changing.

Field

We have had started our rounders season and matches are underway against other schools in the league. Last week we hosted a very strong Weydon team, we didn’t get the win, but we certainly learnt fast. Our Year 7 and 8s have played a friendly mixed match over at Alton school, we are all looking forward to the next league matches coming up. We have teams entered into the league for all year groups and training nights are Wednesdays, plus we are still looking for more students to come and take part.

We have lots of clubs taking place this term they are:

Monday - Volleyball, Athletics, Tennis (Y7 & 8), Cricket (Y7 & 8)

Tuesday - Social Tuesday

Wednesday - Rounders, Dodgeball, Tennis (Y9 & 10)

Thursday - Cricket (Y9 & 10), Tennis (Y9 & 10), Squash

Your PE team are currently working hard on planning Sports Day and the Sports Awards in the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing many students in after-school clubs and lunch clubs, and welcome any suggestions for future clubs.
