Y11 Geography Field trip - September 2018

On a glorious sunny September Monday, the Geography department took our eighty-two wonderful Year 11 GCSE Geographers to complete their second field study investigation on the Dorset-Hampshire border, at the Jurassic Coastline. 

This study covered the enquiry section that forms the UK’s Changing Physical Geography paper, to ‘Investigate the Impact of Coastal Management on Coastal Communities’. 

Students completed their primary data collection by completing environmental quality surveys, assessing coastal management strategies and also by carrying out the all important beach profiling to determine how well the coastal defences were working—this involved the use of some tricky field work equipment!

Two contrasting areas were studied: the heavily defended Hengistbury Head was compared with the seemingly undefended Naish Farm (Barton-on-Sea).

The enquiry has provided students with first hand experience in investigating coastal process and identifying just what a powerful force the sea can be if left to its own accord, and also what environmental, social and economic impact this can have.
