Y8 Citizenship Day - February 2018

On 27th February Calthorpe Park School hosted their annual Year 8 Citizenship Day on the topic of Article 38 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a child; children affected by war. This event is held to raise awareness for the involvement of children in military action and the effect it has on them and their wellbeing.

“It was fun and it was interesting learning about current global issues”

The day started with everyone being introduced to their teams for the day. Students were shown a moving presentation to set the tone for the activities to come.

“It made you more aware of problems going on around the world”

Shortly after the tasks were introduced and the teams set out to a specialized workshop.  The students were able to experience a wide range of activities provided by the visitors from relevant fields.  Each team was able to take part in four different workshops to gain a better understanding of the circumstances that these children are placed in.

“It showed you how you are privileged we are to be living in Britain”

The activities challenged and engaged the students, and gave them the opportunity to use their skills of empathy and open-mindedness.

“It makes us think of how lucky we are”

At the end of the day, we concluded with a short presentation that gave the students time to reflect on their day and see photographs of the activities they participated in.
