Y8 Citizenship Day โ€“ February 2019

Y8 C Day 1On the 12th February Calthorpe Park School hosted their annual Year 8 Citizenship Day on the topic of Children Affected by War which links to Article 38 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a child. This event is held to raise awareness of the involvement of children in military action and the effect it has on them and their wellbeing.

โ€œMy favorite activity was science because we learnt how to filter waterโ€

The day started with everyone being introduced to their teams for the day. Students were shown a moving presentation to set the tone for the activities to come.

โ€œIt made you more aware of problems going on around the worldโ€

Shortly after the tasks were introduced and the teams set out to a specialized workshop. The students were able to experience a wide range of activities provided by the visitors from relevant fields. Each team was able to take part in four different workshops to gain a better understanding of the circumstances that these children are placed in.

โ€œIt showed you how you are privileged we are to be living in Britainโ€

The activities challenged and engaged the students, and gave them the opportunity to use their skills of empathy and open-mindedness.

โ€œThe music and drama activities were really funโ€

At the end of the day, we concluded with a short presentation that gave the students time to reflect on their day and see photographs of the activities they participated in.
