World Book Day – 5 March 2026
We celebrated World Book Day in style this year!
We had a whole range of activities with a focus on reading, the aimed message being books are something to celebrate and enjoy! We had the £1 book tokens for all students, but with the added benefit of having a full stock of the £1 books here in the library, so students could simply collect them from us.
The staff joined in in several ways – one of those was by reading to our students each lesson. A collection of opening extracts from books was shared with the teachers and each class had an extract read to them throughout the day – these were tasters to highlight some of the choices we have in our very well stocked library and the aim was to promote reading for pleasure.
We also had a challenging ‘Who’s Behind the Book’ competition on display where we had a collection of photos of shy staff readers for our students to work out. Many joined in and we had several happy winners of vouchers and stationery. Additionally, we had some amazing ‘Book Tiles’ designed in tutor time – the challenge being design a tile that simply reflects reading and books.
Our library lessons focused on WBD throughout the week, and we ended our reading celebration with a reading based weekly quiz. All these activities were designed to reinforce the importance and value of reading, and especially reading for pleasure as we believe strongly in supporting, encouraging and nurturing an interest in reading. Our staff not only joined in with activities, but they also demonstrated their support by donning some excellent costumes – we had a whole range of book characters visit the site – and it contributed to such a brilliant atmosphere for the students. So, a thank you to fellow colleagues for their participation. Plans are already being made for next year!
