UKMT Team Maths Challenge – March 2026
Our Year 8 and Year 9 mathematicians achieved an exceptional result at the UKMT Team Maths Challenge Regional Finals in Guildford, securing a well‑earned second place in a fiercely competitive field. The team of four—two students from each year group—tackled a series of fast‑paced mathematical rounds designed to test logic, teamwork, communication, and creativity under pressure. The competition brought together some of the strongest young mathematicians in the region, and the standard was incredibly high. Despite this, our students rose to the challenge with confidence and enthusiasm, performing consistently across all rounds, including the group problem‑solving relay, the shuttle, and the much‑loved Crossnumber.
Student Reflections on the Day
The students’ own words capture the excitement, challenge, and sense of achievement that defined the experience:
“I loved taking part in the UKMT Team Regional Challenge because the questions were exciting and it felt great working together under pressure. Our team clicked really well, and solving the tougher problems felt especially rewarding. Coming 2nd place made the whole experience even better, and I’m really proud of what we achieved.”
Another team member highlighted the thrill of the Crossnumber round:
“I really enjoyed the UKMT TMC. It was a fantastic experience, and I’d definitely take part again. The Crossnumber was a particular highlight for me, as it was challenging, collaborative, and a fun way to improve my maths skills under pressure. It also gave me the chance to meet new people and possibly advance to national‑level competitions. Overall, it was a great day, and I’d recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity.”
A third student reflected on the atmosphere and the energy of the event:
“I was one of 4 people who were lucky enough to participate in the UKMT team challenge. I found it very thrilling and fun. The way the rounds were set up, how the questions were put together and the effort made to make maths fun made my experience even more exciting. All the teachers were very supportive and my fellow mathematicians were very nice. All the rounds were like mini races—who could finish first—so even though we weren’t doing any sports, you could feel the adrenaline rushing and the pride when you got something right. If I can, I would do it again and would definitely recommend it to other maths enthusiasts.”
Celebrating a Remarkable Achievement
These reflections highlight not only the academic challenge of the event but also the joy, teamwork, and confidence it inspires. The team’s second‑place finish is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and ability to think creatively under pressure. It also reflects the strength of mathematical talent across our lower school and the positive impact of collaborative problem‑solving opportunities. We are incredibly proud of the team for their achievement and for the way they represented the school throughout the competition. Their enthusiasm sets a wonderful example for future competitors and reinforces the value of embracing mathematical challenges together.
