Calthorpe Park School started as North Fleet Bilateral School in 1969 and has evolved and grown to the school we know today.
As part of the 1967/68 Major Building Programme, the school was designed by the County Architect using the SCOLA Mark IA construction method, which featured standardised components and partial brick cladding. The total cost of the project, including building work, fees, furniture, and equipment, was approximately £410,000.
Calthorpe Park School first opened its doors on Wednesday, 3rd September 1969, under the name North Fleet Bilateral School, with Mr J. Ormerod serving as the founding Headteacher. A few months later, the newly established Governing Body decided to rename the school. Initially, it welcomed 153 students and 11 staff members, with the full range of year groups being introduced gradually over the next five years.
The school’s official opening ceremony took place on Friday, 18th June 1971. It was led by Mr W. van Straubenzee, MBE, MP from the Department of Education and Science. The event began with the National Anthem and a Dedication from the Rev A.C.B Deedes by speeches from various dignitaries, including Major B.C. Debenham, MBE (Chair of the School Governors), Brigadier Sir Richard Anstruther Gough Calthorpe, BT, CBE (Chairman of Hampshire County Council), and Headteacher Mr Ormerod.
Over the years, the school has seen significant expansion. A second phase of building was completed in 1974, followed by the addition of the Maths block, the original and new Drama blocks, and the neighbouring Leisure Centre. Major development took place between 2015 and 2019, including the construction of the AB block at the front of the school – home to 14 classrooms, Reception, the Library, and the Headteacher’s office, as well as a new Sports Hall. The old Leisure Centre was replaced by the XY block, which houses 12 classrooms, a Ceramics room, and a café.
