UKMT - Spring 2024

In January 165 students from Years 9-11 were invited to take part in the UKMT Intermediate competition. To even be chosen to take part in a UKMT challenge shows that your teachers believe you to be a talented mathematician in the top 18% of the UK. UKMT competitions mean you have to be able to think outside the box. They are not about rote learning but applying knowledge in new and different ways and problem solving. These skills are highly prized by both employers and universities. This competition is made more difficult by the award of negative marks if the student chooses an incorrect answer so students have to be careful about which questions they decide to do.

Nationally, 50 % of students who take part receive a certificate. This year CPS students gained 105 certificates - considerably above the national average. A big congratulations to the 43 students who gained a Bronze putting them in the top 9% of the country, the 36 students who got a Silver (top 4.5% of the country) and the 26 students who gained a Gold where they are in the top 9500 students in the country.

We are proud of all who took part in the competition, especially the Year 9 students who are up against students with more years of experience and knowledge.

23 students have qualified through to the Kangaroo and Olympiad rounds on 21st March and we look forward to their results.

After gaining a Gold in the UKMT Senior challenge (designed for years 12 and 13), John S qualified for the  UKMT BMO1 and has gained a Merit.

John sat a 3.5 hour paper consisting of 6 challenging problem solving questions such as these.
