Y7 Winchester Cathedral - January 2019

RE2The RE department ran a trip to Winchester Cathedral earlier this month. The visit began with a workshop on illuminating and decorating letters and this was followed by an in–depth talk about the medieval masterpiece that is the Winchester Bible, the largest and finest of all surviving 12th century English Bibles. A single scribe wrote out the text of the Winchester Bible in Latin, while artists exquisitely illuminated the capital letters; the glowing colours of these illuminated letters, which include gold and lapis lazuli, are as intense today as they were 800 years ago.

All students enjoyed the calligraphy workshop - abilities varied, however, the vast majority showed that they were very able indeed!

The Education Department at the Cathedral were very complimentary of our students and said that their level of questioning was both exceptional and very mature.
